Transitional Dressing: Fall
It may not feel like it right now, in the midst of another August heat wave, but in only a few short weeks we’ll be entering one of the most sartorially-special seasons of the year: transitional season. That short window of in-between weather, not blisteringly hot and not yet winter’s cold, is one of the best times to get dressed. Certain clothing combinations, like shorts and a jacket or a mini skirt and socks, are only possible in the crisp days of early fall.
The best part of the transitional season is that there’s no need to retire your favorite summer pieces just yet. Dresses, sandals, and even a beach caftan can play well with a little bit of creative styling. Don’t believe us? We’ll prove it! Check out six ways to keep on wearing your summer staples in our guide, below.

Look 1 — The Beach Caftan
A beach caftan can make a super-chic top for the fall season when paired with simple black trousers and a substantial shoe.
Look 2 — The Simple Dress
Pair your favorite summer dress with a chunky cardigan and elegant ballet flats to carry it into fall.
Look 3 — The Summer Shorts
Take a cue from The Row’s fall 2024 collection and wear knee-length shorts with an oversized trench coat and minimalist sneakers.
Look 4 — The Chunky Sandal
Extend the life of your favorite summer sandals by simply adding a pair of heavy socks. The combination plays well with minimalist basics like trousers and a button-up.
Look 5 — The Mini Skirt
A mini skirt is the perfect piece for crisp fall weather when paired with loafers, socks, and a cute, seasonal knit.
Look 6 — The White Jeans
White jeans take on a polished air when worn with a sleek black blazer, button-up, and leather boat shoes.
